Flood Waters and Contaminated Water

Many times during hurricanes, sewers can get backed up, mixing in with flood water that enters your home. There are three types of contaminated water, "Clean Water," "Gray Water," and "Black Water."

"Clean Water" (category 1 water) is water from a clean water source only, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 depending on factors such as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.

"Gray Water" (category 2 water) has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow, toilet overflow with some urine - but no feces, or dishwasher overflow.

"Black Water" (category 3 water) is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

Storms Cause Water Damage, Which Causes Mold Growth

If you don't deal with water damage fast enough, it can lead to mold growth. It only takes a small water leak, or even excess humidity, for mold to form in your home. Mold can spread quickly through the property in as little as 48 hours, producing allergens and irritants, and it has the potential to cause other health effects. Summer storms are unpredictable. They’re either enjoyable while sitting in your screened-in porch or watching out of a window, or they are dangerous and cause a threat to your home and life. Pooled water, damage to floors, walls, structures, and more can be the final product of a flood or even a slow but prolonged leak.

After water damage, can you restore your home or company building yourself? This can be a tricky business and poses dangers of a varying nature. Safety measures must be taken, some expertise must be applied, the gravity of the situation must be recognized in no uncertain terms – the list goes on.

Let's take a look at water damage and how to handle it.

What Are the Damaged Materials?

Water can damage everything it touches, no matter what kind of building the leakage and/or damage occurs in. Tropical Storm, Fay, is making its way up the East Coast. The storm is set to bring heavy rains prompting areas to flood. Make sure your property is set up for this type of weather by securing any loose items outside and moving items away from windows and doors. Be sure to account that all employees or family members are safe by establishing evacuation plans in advance, identifying areas outside the building that are designated meeting places. Assign select individuals to keep a list of their assigned team’s names and contact numbers in order to account for their whereabouts.  If water enters the building and evacuation becomes impossible, move to an upper floor, and wait for first responders.  While evacuating, avoid attempting to drive through floods or rising water, nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are auto-related.  Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.  Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall.  Use no open flames (there may be gas escaping from ruptured mains). Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged. If the water has entered the structure through the flooding of a creek, stream, or river, or if it has filtered through insulation during its intrusion, it is considered to be black water and could be hazardous to your health. Avoid contact with contaminated items as much as possible.  Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.  Listen for news reports to learn if the community’s water supply is safe to drink.  Return only when authorities indicate it is safe. Here at SERVPRO of Hoboken/ Union City and Lower Manhattan we understand how badly some storms can affect our customers. Not only do they do damage to the homes and businesses to so many individuals but they also cause a tremendous amount of stress.  We are here to alleviate that stress and restore your home back to the way it once was prior to damage. Not pictured here is the damage a storm that hit this house pretty badly left. It left a mountain of debris to be cleaned up. Our crew went in with their tools and sorted the situation to make the home look like a storm never happened. Our customer was very happy with our work. Pictured here is the property after our crew cleaned everything up.

Snow on the Way

This winter has been a pretty relaxed one. We have not seen too many snow storms or snow at all for that matter. Mother Nature thinks we’ve waited long enough!
